We spoke to Monty Wyatt, Golf Assistant, about representing Guernsey at Junior Inter-Insular, the variety of his job at La Grande Mare, and anticipating his first round of golf on the new course.
Where did your interest in golf come from?
I initially started playing socially with friends, and that got me hooked on trying to continuously improve, which gets so many golfers addicted to the game.
I also started watching golf content online, including club fitting videos. I’ve always been interested in technology in sport, so my passion for golf has really grown from there.
What has been a memorable golf experience for you?
It has to be representing the Island in the Junior Inter-insular. Although we lost, it was a great learning experience and gave me a taste for a challenging, competitive environment.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I really enjoy the variety of the job, and how every day involves a unique challenge. I also enjoy working with a team that strives to be extraordinary every day.
Watching people improve is very rewarding—whether that’s through lessons or club fittings.
How would you like to see your career progress over the next five years?
I’d like to see myself work through the PGA system and focus on club fitting. Eventually, I’d like to become a top fitter; it would be a dream to work at the elite level, focusing on high-performance players.
Where would you most like to play a round of golf, anywhere in the world?
I would love to play a round of golf at Real Club Valderrama in Spain. Due to the tightness of the course, created by the cork-oak trees, it would be an incredible test of accuracy. Valderrama is also meticulously manicured throughout the year, so it would be a beautiful playing experience.

What are you most looking forward to when the course opens later this year?
I am really looking forward to playing on a course that has had so much attention to detail put into it.
It’s certainly something I haven’t seen before, so I think it will be a great experience for everyone who plays the course.
Who would you most like to play a round with and why?
Although it’s probably a bit of an obvious answer, for me, it would have to be Tiger Woods. His knowledge of the game is unmatched, and the shots he can hit are unlike any other player. I can also check that his clubs are fit properly!
